Awareness Campaign Phases

The awareness campaign is designed in three phases to ensure optimum community impact. Libraries and library systems that adopt the program will receive access to Geek the Library materials and other guides to inform campaign implementation.

Phase 1: Create awareness

This launch phase focuses on introducing the awareness campaign beyond the patrons in the library to the broader community via strategic advertising and public relations initiatives—including the use of traditional media, such as local newspaper ads. (Please note that libraries adopting the program will not receive any financial support or grants.) At this point, the goal is to make a personal connection with members of the community by emphasizing ‘geek’ as a verb and the library’s role in helping individuals explore their passions.

Phase 2: Generate engagement

This phase of the awareness campaign provides the opportunity for library staff to engage directly with members of community and influential community organizations. The objective is to leverage the awareness raised by advertising and public relations by taking Geek the Library to community events, continuing to build relationships with local media, and partnering with local businesses and organizations. Participating libraries will find that people in the community are intrigued by the campaign and interested to know more. The campaign is a great conversation starter and people will take posters, bookmarks and handouts to share with others.

Phase 3: Encourage action

This phase is represented by a shift in messaging, which puts more focus on public library funding. A second set of ads and posters reinforce the role that the library plays in helping people find jobs, start new businesses and plan for their future, and the community is asked at every opportunity to join the local public library funding discussion. Information on geekthelibrary.org helps educate the community about library funding and provides examples of how they can show their support.
